Large Works

Vessel no. 79
Stoneware, porcelain, oxides and glaze
14” tall and 9.5” wide

Vessel No. 79 was made during my residency at Medalta in Alberta, Canada, where the prairie landscape and eroded formations of the Drumheller badlands inspired a more sculptural approach to clay. The vessel’s full, rounded body rises into a narrow neck and an asymmetrical rim, where clay has been folded, pushed, and built into rugged formations. Much of the surface remains pale and fractured, allowing the concentrated areas of metallic gray, charcoal, and warm ochre glaze to stand out. The contrast between the quieter body and the intensely worked rim recalls the layered rock and weathered surfaces of the Alberta landscape.
